Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) are the minimum amounts that individuals over the age of 72 ½ must withdraw annually from their retirement accounts such as 401(k)s and IRAs.

The purpose of RMDs is to ensure that individuals do not defer taxation of retirement funds indefinitely. If an individual does not take the required amount of their RMD, they will be subject to a 50% penalty on the amount not taken.
