Long Term Care - Instrumental Activities of Daily Living

Instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) are activities that are necessary for independent functioning and a high quality of life.  These  everyday tasks, called Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs) including:

  • Housework

  • Managing money

  • Taking medication

  • Preparing and cleaning up after meals

  • Shopping for groceries or clothes

  • Using the telephone or other communication devices

  • Caring for pets

  • Responding to emergency alerts such as fire alarms.

Insurance companies often consider IADLs when assessing the level of care needed for policyholders. IADLs include tasks such as shopping, meal preparation, taking medications, managing money, using the telephone and using transportation.

Depending on the type of policy, insurance coverage may include assistance with IADLs or provide financial assistance for their completion. By considering IADLs, insurance companies are able to ensure that policyholders are able to live an independent and fulfilling life.
